Heart Worm Prevention

Ahhh Spring time, what a wonderful time of year. Where everything is starting to turn green and all the hibernators are waking from their naps. We see birds returning from the south, entertaining us with their songs. One of those less pleasurable encounters includes the mosquito. The reason the mosquito is important when speaking about our animals is that they transmit heartworm to our precious furry family members. Heartworm can be fatal but is easily prevented.

What is Heartworm you say?

Heartworm is a parasitic worm that takes up residency in the heart and blood vessels of our beloved pets dogs and cats. They can damage veins, arteries and vital organs as they grow and multiply.

What are some of the symptoms?

In dogs, common symptoms include:

  • labored breathing, coughing
  • fatigue after moderate exercise
  • listlessness, vomiting, weight loss

How do you know if your dog has heartworm?

We will perform an examination and do a simple test. Dr. Candy will take a very small sample of blood from your dog’s front leg. Just 3 drops of blood and we get the results right there within 10 minutes.

How can you prevent heartworm?

After you have received a negative test result you should administer a heartworm prevention pill once a month during the season when mosquitos are active. The medication tablets are flavored for easy administration, very safe to use, and it also includes a safe general dewormer.

Call us today to make an appointment to get your heart worm test and start a prevention program.
